The Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grunewald

The Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grunewald (1515)
Year: 1515
Medium: Oil paint with carved shrine
Description: The image of Jesus is surreal; hands are crippled around the nails, dark blood is covering his body (and pimples) and the loin cloth looks worn. John the Baptist is seen with the lamb standing by his right side (a powerful symbol of Christ). St. Anthony is in the left panel and St. Sebastian is in the right. German.
