Butchers Stall by Pieter Aertsen

Butchers Stall by Pieter Aertsen (1527)
Year: 1527
Medium: Oil on panel
Description: Every possible meat can be seen; the cow is staring right back at you. In the window above the cow one can see a woman riding a horse; this is Mary and Joseph on their way to Egypt to escape Harod. They are giving alms to the poor. On the other side one can see a prostitute advertising her services. Some say the slaughtered animals are a symbol for a slaughtered believer, a martyr. Flemish.
