Alterpiece of the Holy Blood by Tilman Riemenschneider

Alterpiece of the Holy Blood by Tilman Riemenschneider (1500s)
Year: 1500s
Medium: Carved limewood
Description: There is no paint at all; you can see beautifulness of wood & carving, which in turn makes it more sophisticated. It is in a German church used as a reliquary for a single drop of the Blood of Christ believed to have come from the side wound. This piece was not meant to be seen, it was meant to be experienced. There are windows carved into the Last Supper room so you can see the light from the windows in the church shine through; Judas is in center, not Jesus. Interestingly, some of the figures might have been made to be removed.
